Austin, Texas Director Jett Garner’s Short Film “Kung Pao Tofu – Dragon Style” Packs Simple, Spicy Punch.
In a typical ShortFilmTexas filmmaker interview we would go into much more detail with the filmmaker on how he or she made the film. In this particular case, as regular members of the SFT community will recognize, the director of this film, Jett Garner, also hosts his own web series called “Jettisodes.” The answers to the questions below will be greatly expanded upon in the next Jettisode which will play the following week. Stay tuned.
And on a personal note, Jett’s short film also represents the 100th short film to run on ShortFilmTexas.com. This is huge and to have Jett’s film mark this special occasion couldn’t be more fitting. Thanks to all the filmmakers who continue to support Texas film and tune in regularly to SFT. Here’s to 100 more!
Film Title: Kung Pao Tofu – Dragon Style
Writer / Director: Jett Garner
Director of Cinematography: Ben Columbus
Cast: Amanda Brown, Michael Rains, Ace Feeman
SHORTFILMTEXAS (SFT): What is the film about?
JETT GARNER (JG): I don’t want to say too much here. Basically, we spend an evening with a couple celebrating an anniversary.

SFT: How did the story come about?
JG: Some of the story is based on a real life relationship/experience.
SFT: There is a real natural flow to the acting. Did you stick to a script or was it move improv?
JG: I had an outline of the story/film. However, we did improvise the dialogue one hundred percent. Important note- Improv will work as long as you have actors that can naturally manifest within the story/plot.
SFT: What did you shoot on? Edit on? (Likes/Dislikes)
JG: We utilized the Panasonic 24p camera. It was the very same camera Jay Duplass used to make ‘The Puffy Chair’, and John Bryant used in several of his short films. I do not have a list of pros and cons as I am not technically astute to cameras and lenses. I cut the film on Apple I-movies. It is a simple yet powerful software that has served well cutting very basic and simple films.

SFT: Tell me a little about your cast/crew.
JG: We made this film in six or eight hours. The only thing I paid for was the sound person. Always pay for a sound. It is crucial. But, with a talented cast and crew and a clever idea you can make any short film for under one hundred dollars and if your story is simple enough you shoot it entirely within a day.
SFT: What did you learn from making the film?
JG: I learned that sound is invaluable and that actors love to improvise- as it empowers them to bring more to the table.

SFT: Favorite moment while making the film?
JG: Finding a crew member to play the final role in the last scene. He did great.
SHORTFILMTEXAS: Do you have any advice to a first time filmmaker shooting less script oriented?
JETT GARNER: Keep it simple and real.

In this first Jettisode (Jettisode 18!) of 2010, Jett Garner gives us his take on the Hughes Brothers’ film, Book of Eli, starring Denzel Washington and Gary Oldman. Do we have a winner or is it a look at things to come in 2010?
Jett also looks back at 2009 and some of the recent “new classics” like The Hurt Locker and asks the question if they match up to the “old classics” like The Godfather or Gladiator. Is the current cream of the crop gonna stay at the top or sink away into cinema history?

In the last Jettisode (Jettisode 16), Jett stirred up a bit of controversy due to his honesty regarding padding the resume. Every industry in every business you’ll find that people pad resumes. Hell, we do it on our college applications don’t we?
Anyway, the greatest thing about episode 16 was that it started some open and civil dialogue in the comments section. Love to see more of it in the future!
And from the ashes of the the last Jettisode births Jettisode 17, where Jett Garner responds to Short Film Texas community member Kathy Greenup and her dilemma regarding sending her high school graduate daughter off to Los Angeles to pursue her acting career.
Are there alternatives to LA? What cities offer a serious actor more opportunity than Los Angeles?

Jettisode 16 – Tips On Padding Your Acting Resume

I wonder what's on his resume?
In Jettisode 16, Actor / Director Jett Garner discusses the finer art of padding one’s acting resume.
Having “hired” said actor I need to go back and look at that resume he gave us so many years ago and see what fictional works of acting he put down. I’m sure there are some classics. Regardless of how you look at it, he got the job and excelled in his role.
Could a little resume padding help you?
Listen and learn.

Last week, Austin Actor/Director Jett Garner pleaded for viewer’s to leave respectful and constructive responses and comments to the films shown on ShortFilmTexas. What we got instead was a very unnecessarily crude and vicious email sent to ShortFilmTexas in regards to the latest episode of the Dallas, Texas web series “Dallywood.”
In Jettisode 15(!!) Jett responds to this delightful old man’s email and then puts in his 3 cents regarding another aging Hollywood old-timer, Roman Polanski and his recent arrest.
