Director Lee takes the spotlight at UTA

The posters around campus read: “You’ve seen the movies. Now meet the man.” The face on the poster belongs to filmmaker Spike Lee, the Oscar-nominated director of Do the Right Thing, Bamboozled, Malcolm X and a score of other highly regarded movies that cast a critical eye on American society. Lee is slated to speak at the University of Texas at Arlington campus Saturday evening, and Narcel Reedus and many of his students are building their weekends around the appearance.
Reedus teaches an undergraduate class on Lee’s films. The way Reedus sees it, aspiring moviemakers couldn’t have a better role model. Lee not only makes money — She’s Gotta Have It was made for $175,000 and grossed $7 million domestically, according to online database IMBd — but takes on big issues, even in his comedies.
