An insightful, poignant look at the experience of a child now a woman and how it has shaped, colored, turned and twisted every aspect of her life.
Casting:
ANE (main character) @ Age 50 - Black/African American
She is a careful and learned woman, who speaks carefully and gestures with an air of exactness. She rarely shows emotion and seems tenderly in control of everything and everyone around her. We only hear her voice and see her hands and clothing. She wears very comfortable loose clothes and very little jewelry, only her wedding ring. She speaks about even the most insane happenings in a matter of fact sort of way, as she is above the drama of most experiences. All of this should be conveyed with her voice, as we never see Jane.
JANE @ Age 35 - Black/African American
She is a stern and serious woman, concerned with keeping control of the things around her. She isn’t excitable but rather action oriented. She talks herself through everything she does, talks to herself while washing the dishes, saying “these dishes are really dirty, god knows how they got this foul in such a short amount of time.” All of this should be conveyed with her voice, as we never see Jane.
JANE @ Age 22 - Black/African American
Jane is a dramatic young adult, disenchanted with most institutions be it school church or the government. She is modestly opposed to participating in religion especially, as she sees no change in people’s behavior by way of any god, she feels “church” to be at its best ineffective. She is a consistently respectful child afraid to cross those who raised her. All of this should be conveyed with her voice, as we never see Jane.
JANE @ Age 16 - Black/African American
Jane is the popular girl in high school, outgoing and adaptable; she fits in with everyone and repels all the unflinchingly cool kids who became popular because of something corrupted like sports or marijuana distribution. She is the apple of every young man’s eye, partly because of the air of unattainibility she exudes. She doesn’t show large ranges of emotion however to her peers. All of this should be conveyed with her voice, as we never see Jane.
JANE @ Age 6 - Black/African American
Jane is a quiet shy young girl. She is emotional however and always very concerned with something that is happening be it school or her friend’s scratches and bruises, “I hope they heal!” she has a naturally empathetic spirit. And acutely feels the ranges of her emotions. All of this should be conveyed with her voice, as we never see Jane.
DEACON @ Age 60 - Black/ African American
The deacon is a churchy old man who is smooth beyond your wildest imagination. He walks with a jig and a smile and smells like hair oil. When he sees someone he knows he turns his palms to the sky but keeps his arms by his sides and stops in his tracks to dramatize their siting. He wears finely pressed shirts and suits and heavily accessorizes himself with pocket watches, antique fob chains, money clips, tie clips, lapel pins, rings, bracelets, Cufflinks, and belt clips. He is a man of actual faith, whose actions he must actually rationalize with a god he actually believes in, he is neither cynical, nor nihilistic, but reluctantly and wildly hedonistic.
JANE’S MOTHER @ Age 35 - Black/African American
She has and old spirit even as a young woman and most of the time her children are on her mind. She loves motherhood but is not a generally jolly person; she is terse and abrupt but skilled in acting pleasant to make an impression. Things weight heavy on her and she is well equipped and strong enough to lift it.
JANE’S MOTHER @ Age 65 - Black/African American
Jane’s mother has grown contented with the things she has been able to accomplish and believes her life to be generally happy and good. She is a good good Christian and wants her kids to follow suit. Her life centers on the church and what is going on there, socially as much as spiritually. She feels like she owes a debt, not to god, but to the church and its culture, which has given her so much to live for.
JANE’S HUSBAND @ Ages 35 and 65 - Black/African American
Jane’s husband is a very normal guy, esponsible, and hardworking, his sole vice is a difficult to kick cigarette habit that he has whittled down to two a week over a period of 9 years. He owns a small business of movers; he likes his work, the people the number crunching, the ability to determine your own destiny. He is a simple person and is quite perplexed by Jane’s complexity. She seems to him to possess layers that he doesn’t have. She has 10 or so where he has one, one that he always has on. Where he is constant and predictable she is inconsistent but still reliable. He is a church going man not because of the faith but because he believes it the best way to socialize his children. He however believes whole-heartedly in this method as if the method was a faith within itself. – The 65 yr old isn’t different just 30 yrs older
MARRIAGE COUNSELOR (female) @ Age 45 - ANY RACE/ ETHNICITY
She is a woman who came to marriage counseling through another profession, coaching or sports admin. She is a bad dresser and things fit her in a frumpy way. She is very very skilled at speaking with people and has a soothing voice that feels like it fades in and out of each sentence, and a rhythmic iambic scheme that she seems to use whenever she is trying to give someone direction of any kind.
